It’s iPhone Day… But Who Wants the iPhone?

podcast version of this post

Line of aspiring iPhone buyers on 5th Avenue, NYC last night (Eugene Lewis for ABC News)If you don’t know today is “iPhone Day” – the first day of Apple iPhone availability from AT&T – you’ve been in a coma. As I write this, long lines of the faithful have been forming overnight to be among the first to buy an iPhone.

But beyond “the faithful”, who’s really interested in buying an iPhone – and why, or why not? Shiv Bakhshi and Chris Hazelton just completed a brief survey of online shoppers of mobile phones, to answer that question. The full report is over on idc.com, but they wanted to share the basic findings here on IDC eXchange.

Here are the survey’s four key findings, followed by the chart of responses to the simple question: “Are you interested in buying an Apple iPhone?”:

  • Limiting the availability of the device to a single carrier (AT&T) in the United States will dampen demand for the iPhone. Almost one in five respondents said they would buy the iPhone if it were offered by their current mobile carrier.
  • Independent of the carrier issue, respondents expressed concerns about the price of the iPhone (which will not be subsidized). Nearly 20% of respondents said they would buy the iPhone if it were under $299.
  • More than 75% of the respondents who play music on their mobile phones expressed active interest in sideloading multimedia content on their mobile phones (using their computers, etc.) rather than going through the mobile carrier.
  • Some respondents suggested they would rather wait for the next generation of the iPhone, when it might be made available with an improved set of features.
